Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai Season 1 Review

Lit translation: “My Little Sister Can’t Be This Cute” shortened and more commonly used name: Oreimo

The title translation is such that I actually avoided the first season, but after hearing good things I checked out the start of the second season then went back and watched the full first season and “True Ending” (I’ll explain later what that’s about) and then continued with the second season and I’m glad I did.

If the series was about incest (as I presumed by the title) I wouldn’t have been interested, it doesn’t interest me so as you can imagine the title “My Little Sister Can’t Be This Cute” (English translation) can put people off.

However, after watching the first season of this show, I realised that not only was this show incest free , but also hugely entertaining and surprisingly well done.

The plot revolves around a brother Kyosuke Kosaka (17 years old) and sister Kirino. Like any siblings they don’t get along very well, for as long as Kyosuke can remember, Kirino has ignored his comings and goings and looked at him with spurning eyes. When it seemed as if the relationship between Kyosuke and his sister Kirnio (14 years old), would continue this way forever Kyosuke finds out his sister has a hidden secret.

One day Kyosuke finds a DVD case of a magical girl anime which had fallen in his house’s entrance way. To Kyosuke’s surprise, he finds a hidden eroge (an adult game) inside the case and he soon learns that both the DVD and the game belong to Kirino. That night, Kirino brings Kyosuke to her room and reveals herself to be an otaku with an extensive collection of moe anime and younger sister-themed eroge she has been collecting in secret.

This sets off a string of events where Kyosuke finds himself turning into Kirino’s confidant of her secret hobby due to her not being able to tell or talk to any of her close friends about eroge or anime. Kyosuke then starts his campaign to help his sister out with “life counselling”, helping her make some new  otaku friends she can talk to. He also finds himself covering for her, etc slowly brining them closer together in the process.

But this is where I’m stopping cause if I add anything else I’ll be spoiling the fun and potentially starting to touch on stuff from the second season which I’m currently still enjoying.

However at the start I mentioned “True Ending” which I will explain in more detail now: The final episode, episode 12 ties up some lose ends and ends the series quite neatly (without spoiling it) except its not the actually ending that was in the light novel!

So this is where another small set of 4 episodes break off, 1st titled True Ending which is basically episode 12 again but this time following the Light Novel closer and also ties in with the second season which goes by the same name (except a full stop after Nai).
Then there are also 3 other episodes which continue to build the other characters in the series.

I guess there is a lesson to be learned from this series! The old saying “don’t judge a book via its cover” is also true for anime titles :) another example Hentai Prince, which has no Hentai, ecchie etc!

So anyway before I digress to finish this review I’d like to say.

Overall Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai Season 1 is a surprisingly good and entertaining series especially if you like Slice of Life/Comedy style.

Though at the same time it actually quite deep with some very nice character development (which continues more into the second season).

While on the topic of characters, there are a fair few very cute characters throughout the series each gets some development throughout the series, from his old best friend Manami through to my favourite character in her Gothic dresses Ruri. All of which play their own parts in Kyosuke’s and Kirino’s lives making this story so entertaining.

I guess what I’m trying to say is this is a very good anime and well worth a watch, so please ignore the title and check it out, I don’t think you will regret it.

And finally, on a side note though the Novel’s and Anime are yet to be translated or dubbed into English so you will have to learn Japanese or watch the subtitled version 😉 However if you like Manga the series is available and has been translated which I’ve linked the first 4 books below:
